Description

Jagged snow-capped peaks rise dramatically above Lake Pehoe in Torres del Paine National Park in Chile. Lush green hills roll gently in the foreground under a cloudy sky. A sense of both tranquility and ruggedness is evoked by the contrasting elements of the landscape. Torres del Paine National Park is located in the southernmost part of Chile and features stunning scenery including glaciers, lakes, mountains, and rivers. The park was established in 1959 but received its present name in 1970. In 1978 it was declared a Biosphere Reserve by UNESCO's Man and Biosphere Program, a designation indicating a site for promoting solutions reconciling the conservation of biodiversity with its sustainable use.
